Absorbed in the energy of purity, this Tanjore painting displays Lord Vishnu, the sustainer and maintainer of this Universe. He is situated in everyone’s heart in the form of Paramatma or Supersoul that guides the individual soul to seek the path of spiritual enlightenment. With His inconceivable potency, He expands Himself into Garbhodakshayi Vishnu to balance the universe and Kshirodakshayi Vishnu as Paramatma.
Here, the Lord sits in Ardhapadmasana on an elevated seat which is in the shape of a full-blown lotus. He is surrounded by a Kirtimukha altar which makes His throne a beautiful altar. Clad in an effulgent pitambar dhoti down to His ankles and adorned with several jewels along with the huge crown on His head, He sits firm and bold. He has a broad chest, a chest which is like palace of love for His devotees. He has four beautiful arms (chaturbhuja); the two upper arms carry the Sudarshan Chakra and Panchajanya Conch Shell, while the lower right hand is in Abhaya Mudra and the left in the boon granting Varada Mudra. His lotus palms have a red hue which are the abode of all auspiciousness. His body complexion resembles the color of fresh monsoon clouds filled with water. The glance of merciful Lord Vishnu is enough to put anyone in the state of pure bliss. Finally, the way the artist has embellished this painting with pure gold coating and studded-stones is undeniably praiseworthy.
