A highly stylised composition to grace the home or office of the Vaishnavite. The Tanjore painting that you see on this page depicts the great Lord Vishnu with his wives and vahana (divine mount). All four figures are arranged in perfect symmetry within a curvaceous pot-shaped structure, poised on a layered and embedded plinth.
Both the plinth and the pot are made with extensive gesso. The same is gilded with pure gold, which is further engraved with intricate vine-like patterns. Miniscule beads in glittering red and green break the monotony of the solid gold colour, giving the impression of rubies and emeralds. The black and scarlet backdrop brings out the beauty of these aspects of the painting.
The feet of Lord Vishnu are balanced on the palms of the devoted Garuda. He is seated balanced on a single knee on the ground, the usual stance of Garuda. On either side stand Bhudevi and Sridevi, the beauteous wives of Vishnu, who are different aspects of Devi Lakshmi.
