Venkateshwara is the most popular deity of south India on whom successive dynasties of kings of Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka had lavished munificent grants and endowment. In this painting, four-armed Vishnu is seen standing on a lotus placed on a golden pedestal. In his two upper hands, he holds his Sudarshan Chakra and the Panchajanya Conch Shell, while his lower hands are in the boon-granting Varada Mudra and resting posture. A serpent is also wrapped around each of his upper arms. The arched eyebrows, gently lowered eyes, and full lips give the deity’s countenance the calm and introspective look as seen on the Chola bronzes. The two golden gleaming lamps are shown on both sides. The Tanjore painting of Venkateshvar is not only gilded in gold but has a thick paisley border on the side which magnifies the beauty of southern Indian Tanjore. Several little greens, white, and red gleaming stones have been embedded in the coating in such a way that they form the detailing in this painting, making it stand out.
