Decorated with flower garlands and golden ornaments, the idol of Lord Venkateshwar as Balaji stands on a pedestal, divine and holy. He is one with many names like Govinda, Srinivasa, and Venkataramana. However, Balaji is the one name he is known by across the land—north and south. It is said that he was given this name by a man called Hathiram Baba. All the way from the warm sands of Rajasthan, Hathiram Baba, an avid follower of Lord Vishnu, travelled south to Tirumala. He wanted to see Lord Vishnu and when he heard that he had manifested in the form of Lord Venkateshwara, residing in Tirumala Hills, he could not wait to see him. When he reached his destination after a long pilgrimage, he sat down under a tree in the hills and began his tapasya (meditation).
During this, a small boy came along and started bothering Hathiram, who asked him to stay away. It wasn’t until later that he realised that the small boy was Lord Venkateshwara himself, appearing to him as a child. He apologised profusely and performed penance to ask for his lord’s forgiveness. During this, he called him Balaji as he had appeared to him in the form of a bala (child).
