A portly Krishna gathers His two wives, Satyabhama and Rukmani, in His arms. He is wearing a peeta-coloured (amber) dhoti in keeping with His traditional iconography, while His wives are clad in red and green silks. The beauty of this Tanjore painting lies in the pure gold embellishments on their sarees and in the adornments of all three.
Thick black locks on all the three divine heads. Set off by ornaments of chunky gold, executed with pure metallic embellishment characteristic to the art of Thanjavur. Fresh lotus blooms in the garland of Krishna and in the hand of one of His wives breaks the monotony of the gold-inlaid gessowork. The faces of Satyabhama and Rukmani, with the golden radiance of their complexion, are no less than the finest of lotus blooms.
Like traditional Tanjore paintings, the composition that you see on this page features a temple entrance in the foreground. It is made of the same metallic gessowork, inlaid with dark red stones that resemble rubies.
