Krishna with his primary queens- Rukmini and Satyabhama is a popular image in Tanjore paintings, where along with the marital bliss and harmony of the divine trio, artists emphasize the world-nurturing togetherness of Sri Vishnu with his Shaktis- Lakshmi, and Bhudevi, who incarnated as Rukmini and Satyabhama to accompany and empower their beloved in the task of preserving the Srishti. This Thanjavur painting presents Sri Krishna in a youthful form, glowing like the moon, along with Rukmini and Satyabhama in a playful mood.
Dressed regally, Krishna's figure takes up the center space, where he is cajoled lovingly by Rukmini and Satyabhama to take a morsel of Makhan (butter). Holding his arms affectionately, the queens' supple bodies add a sense of movement to the painting, a rare quality in Thanjavur paintings. Blue or Neela, the color of the sky and also of Sri Vishnu, symbolizing the expansiveness of his benevolence is used in the background, against which the heavenly trio stands charming the three worlds with their divinity.
