Lord Krishna is the source of all pleasure and the cause of all causes. Although He is the Supreme Lord, with His inconceivable potency, He descended on the earth in Dwapar Yuga as an ordinary child and performed transcendental pastimes to engage with His beloved devotees and attract the fallen souls into God consciousness. His unrealistic activities were always an astonishment for everyone around Him. Whoever reads or hears Krishna’s sweet Vrindavan pastimes simply goes into the state of trance and experiences the highest form of pleasure.
Among many Tanjore paintings, Lord Krishna’s artwork is given the most love. Here, the All-Attractive Lord Krishna is depicted in His childhood form as seated on a bed made by the coils of Anantashesha or Sheshanaag, whose multiple hoods form a huge canopy above His head. Everything about Krishna is so pleasing; a soft and gentle smile on His moonlike face, His innocent eyes, etc. Mother Yashoda, who stands beside her sweet child has decorated Him with several jewels and a peacock feather on head. Although Krishna holds a butterball in His rught hand, she offers Makhan chor a pot full of butterballs to eat. Nanda Maharaj looks at Krishna with great affection. All the gopis (cowherd girls) present there stand to serve Krishna with love and devotion because seeing and serving Krishna is their only means of happiness. This is not just a painting. Whoever sees Krishna sees a festival.
