Navaneetha Krishna, the innocent-faced incarnation of Lord Krishna, lays down on a golden pedestal in this Tanjore painting. He sits with a complexion of lotus leaves like many babies, but his eyes hold the knowledge that encompasses the entire cosmos. The peacock feather on the top of his head is prominent against the dark of the night.
Three gopis are attending to Bal Krishna’s every need, entertaining him with their presence. One gazes upon him, eyes full of devotion while the other delicately fans him. The third one has a parrot resting on her wrist as she offers a piece of butter to Lord Krishna. On the ground in front of Lord Krishna stands a small plant of tulsi (holy basil). Tulsi is considered to be one of the true-hearted devotees of Lord Krishna. Whenever one pays their respects to Lord Vishnu or Lord Krishna, a sprig of the tulsi plant is added on top of the offerings. Cows and deers are two of the most sacred animals in Hinduism, considered to be pure and innocent. They flank the small basil plant, taking comfort in the very presence of the lord. Whenever one is in the company of the Supreme Lord, there is a consolation to be found.
