Framed in teakwood, this Tanjore painting captures a wonderful pastime of Lord Krishna who appeared in the Yadu Dynasty in Dwapar Yuga as an ordinary child and performed many mystic and uncommon activities that were always an astonishment for all the inhabitants of Vrindavan, including Mother Yashoda and Nanda Maharaj. Although He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, He appeared as a simple cowherd boy in order to engage His beloved devotees in His transcendental pastimes. All the residents of Vrindavan loved Krishna with their heart and soul, and Krishna being the source of all pleasure, gave them the highest form of pleasure in return.
Lord Krishna loved all the people of Vrindavan very much. He used to go to the forests to graze the cows and play with the gopas near the holy Yamuna River. There lived a demoniac serpent named Kaliya who polluted the river with his poisonous fumes and no bird could even fly above the river due to his fatal fumes. Everyone in Vrindavan was disturbed by the ill acts of Kaliya. To save His beloved devotees, the greatest and true savior of all, Krishna, came to the rescue. He jumped on the multiple hoods of the serpent and defeated him victoriously. As you can see here, Krishna is dancing on the hoods and holds Kaliya’s tail with one hand, and His divine flute in the other hand. He is beautifully clad in a short-length dhoti and is adorned with several ornaments on His pleasing body. As the All-Powerful Krishna defeated Kaliya, his wife Nagapatni appeared from the water and prayed to the Lord to free her husband. Seeing this powerful form of Lord Krishna, even the fishes in the water became ecstatic. Thus, wherever there is Lord Krishna, there is nothing but a festival.
