The ever-youthful supreme Lord Krishna descended himself on the earth to give His devotees the chance to directly associate with him and take part in his pastimes. Whoever reads or hears his sweet Vrindavan pastimes effortlessly enters into a state of trance. All the inhabitants of Vrindavan including animals loved and served Krishna with all their heart and soul and he fully reciprocated with them and gave them the highest form of pleasure.
This Tanjore style painting gloriously portrays Lord Krishna subduing the serpent Kaliya. This serpent used to live in the Yamuna River and polluted the entire river with his poisonous fumes, and thus, all the people of Vrindavan were very much disturbed by the ill actions of Kaliya. Then comes the true saviour of all, Lord Krishna, to the rescue. He jumped on the multiple hoods of Kaliya and His strength defeated him. In this painting, He can be seen sweetly dancing on the hoods; note the tilt in His delicate neck, how he gracefully holds up the serpent’s tail with both his hands and a soft smile on his moonlike face. He is adorned with several ornaments on his blue complexioned body which resembles the colour of fresh monsoon clouds. Major part of this artwork is perfectly embellished with pure gold coating and studded stones, which is the characteristic feature of Tanjore paintings.
