This is a matchless Tanjore painting portraying Lord Krishna’s great pastime of subduing Kaliya. Kaliya was a demoniac serpent residing within a lake in the Yamuna River in the land of Vrindavan and had polluted the water with his poisonous fumes. The people of Vraja were very much disturbed by this act of Kaliya and then the source of all power, Krishna, came to defeat him. The painting has been elaborately decorated with 24 Karat Gold coating and beautiful red stones, the main characteristic of the Tanjore style paintings.
Lord Krishna is clad in a dhoti down to His ankles and decorated with several beautiful ornaments on His transcendental body. The Kaustubhamani necklace around His neck shines like the sun and a peacock feather on the head looks enchanting. In order to rescue the divine Yamuna River from the harmful association of Kaliya. When Lord Krishna jumped upon his hoods, he could not even move a little bit and then Krishna started dancing on him. Makhanchor Krishna holds a butterball in His right hand and the tail of Kaliya from the left hand. Kaliya finally realized that Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead and thus he surrendered unto His lotus feet. Seeing this, the mermaids or Nagapatnis (wives of Kaliya) emerged from the river and prayed to Krishna to deliver their husband from all the sinful reactions and Goddesses showered flowers upon the Lord from the sky.
