The marital status of Lord Karttikeya is subject to contradiction. While in North India, He is regarded as an irresistibly handsome brahmacari, He is a married deva according to South Indian tradition. Even then, Devasena is considered to be His only wife in some regions, while in others both Devasena and Valli are married to Him.
The Lord Karttikeya composition that you see on this page depicts Him standing between His two wives. The three deities are clad in silks of peach and green and amber, complemented with copious proportions of bejewelled gold ornaments. The same are made of extensive metallic gesso-work, the signature aspect of the traditional Tanjore painting.
The attire and adornments of the deities, especially Karttikeya, have been executed with the greatest symmetry and attention to detail. The layers of angavastram and ornamentation are clearly discernible. Bits of red and green inlaid into the gold give the impression of jewels and are symbolic of the divine glamour of the devas.
