Holding eternal love for Lord Rama in his heart, Lord Hanuman is glorified in this Tanjore painting. Born to his mother Anjana and the wind god Vayu, Hanuman is a fervent devotee of Lord Rama. His tales in the Ramayana paint him as heroic, with unshakable self-control and faith. Another thing the monkey god is known for was his ravenousness, both as a child and as an adult.
Once, when youthful, innocent Hanuman woke up terribly hungry, he went out in search of food. When he found the kitchen to be empty, he climbed numerous trees and ate all the food, and yet his hunger did not abate. Then, he noticed a red, round thing in the sky. It looked ripe and to young Hanuman, it seemed like a fruit. He flew straight up to it, grabbed it in his palms with both hands, and swallowed it. Another time, after the defeat of Ravana, Hanuman had been invited by Lord Rama and Devi Sita for a meal. Hanuman agreed and sat down to eat. No matter what he ate, however, his hunger did not sate. Devi Sita, exhausted, went to ask the Lord what she must do to fulfill her guest and he told her to feed him a leaf of tulsi. Finally, his hunger was sated.
