A mesmerizing Tanjore painting portraying Lord Ganesha, the noble and loyal child of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati. He is revered as Vighnaharta because he removes all the obstacles from the path of success in the devotees’ life and showers his special blessings upon those who seek the Absolute Truth by giving them the ultimate knowledge. His head of an elephant and the body of a human makes him unique in appearance.
Here, the leader of all the Ganas (attendants) of Lord Shiva sits in Padmasana on an elevated seat surrounded by a beautiful Kirtimukha altar which is entirely coated with pure gold, the main feature of Tanjore paintings. Clad in a pitambara (bright yellow) dhoti and his complexion of molten gold appear just like a glowing sun. He is adorned with a flower garland, a long neckpiece reaching to his pot-belly and a stones-studded crown on his head. His four arms (chaturbhuja) carry different items; the two upper hands carry an elephant goad and the noose, while the lower left holds a laddoo, a sweet he is very fond of eating, and the right hand holds a broken tusk for which is also known as Ekadanta (having one whole tusk). The lord is accompanied by his mount ‘Mooshak’ underneath his lotus feet, ready to serve his master at any moment.
