Lord Ganesha, the sweet and noble child of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati is portrayed in the most wonderful way in this painting. He is revered as the patron of science and arts. He is also known as ‘Ganapati’ because he is the leader of all the Ganas (attendants) of his father Mahadeva. Vighnharta Shri Ganesha, the remover of obstacles is worshiped first in all the auspicious ceremonies and rites.
Having the head of an elephant and the body of a human, Lord Ganesha is seated on a throne having four arms (chaturbhuja). The posterior right hand carries an axe, the left hand carries Pasha (noose), the anterior right hand holds a Modak (his favorite sweet), and the left is in the Abhaya Mudra (fearlessness). He is perfectly attired in a silk bright yellow dhoti down to his ankles and accompanied by his mount mooshak (mouse) who is present near the Lord’s lotus feet glancing at his master while eating a laddoo.
A big Kirtimukha Aureole surrounds his upper body and a beautiful Prabhavali (arch) above him gives this painting an aesthetic look. The typical Indian patterns on the Prabhavali and the stones-studded aureole bring a classical sensibility to the entire artwork. Also, the use of vivid colors as well as the precise pure gold coating evoke a feeling of purity.
