A magnificent piece of art illustrating Ganesha, the noble child of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati. Often worshiped at the start of every auspicious ceremony and rite, the lord is known as Vighnaharta Shri Ganesha and removes all the obstacles from the path of success in the lives of his devotees. But their lies his special blessing for those who seek the knowledge or path to the Absolute Truth. He gives them spiritual wealth. The lord is also an embodiment of celebration and joy as he is the patron of science and arts.
This Tanjore painting depicts the head of all the Ganas (attendants) of Lord Shiva, Ganapati, riding a lion with a ferocious face, protruding tongue and exposed teeth. Having the head of an elephant and the body of a human having eight arms (Ashtabhuja), this special form of Lord Ganesha is very powerful. Dressed in a bright yellow dhoti down to his ankles and ornamented with several jewels on his fair complexioned body, he holds a full-blown lotus flower, a branch of colorful flowers, and a pot of jewels in his upper left hands, while the lower hand is in Abhaya Mudra (gesture of fearlessness). The upper right hands hold an elephant goad and a flower bunch, while the lower hand is in the boon granting Varada Mudra. The beautiful crown on his head is finely carved and studded with red and green stones. Also, the fact that such an intricate and delightful detailing has been designed on the Prabhavali above the icon of the lord in a painting is beyond belief.
