Batik has developed as an art form rapidly in the past few decades. It is a tedious art, as all parts of the design that are to resist a certain color are waxed. Thus starts a process of waxing and dyeing till all the required colors are obtained.

Genre scenes are popular but the all time favorite is the icon of Ganesha, remover of obstacles. The pattern here is sketched to resemble blocks. He is vermilion in color, having a large belly and holding in his upper hands an axe and a lotus, and rosaries in the lower ones. On his forehead shines the young moon and on his head sits an ornate crest. He is bedecked in stone studded jewels. Strung beads reach below his protruding belly. Both legs are turned inside, though the sloes are not touching each other. On the forehead, just below the symbol of Shiva is a floral bindu, a decorative intention of the artist. Ganesha wears a white dhoti and a patterned scarf hangs on either side. The mouse, the mount of Lord Ganesha is proportionally quite small.

The block printed effect is quite novel in batik. The background is pale with a slight crackle, at trait typical of batik, which in instances can be extremely effective.
