This is a rare depiction of Buddhist culture being painted in an Indian art style. Madhubani art is an age-old art form started in Mithila (a village in Bihar) depicting people’s association with deities from ancient epics. Apart from the main field imagery, Madhubani paintings have a speciality of not leaving any kind of spaces, all gaps are filled with flowers, birds, animals or geometric patterns. As shown here, the bright orange colored background is covered with the giant Bodhi tree bearing yellow colored fruits of enlightenment and the bottom blue background symbolizing water, depicted in an artistic pattern of small leaves and vines.
Lord Buddha sits here in padmasana on a full bloom lotus with the left hand resting on his lap and right raised high in shunya mudra signifying the gesture of emptiness from all material belongings; garbed in an orange and grey striped robe that veils his body in an elegant manner and adorned with black and yellow sacred Buddhist jewels. Painted in his usual iconography of extensive coiled hairs, long ears, slight smiling lips and vigilant eyes, spreading the divine aura of calmness and composure.
The giant Bodhi tree at the back is symbolic as the tree of awakening beneath which Buddha started his journey to enlightenment; painted here with dark branches and loaded with green and grey shaded leaves. This Madhubani art is a colorful depiction of Buddha in his meditation for the goal of achieving enlightenment.
