Lord Balarama or Haladhara, the elder brother of Sri Krishna according to some Hindu traditions is one of the Dashavatara or ten incarnations of Vishnu, while others revere him as the avatar of Sheshanaga.
This Tanjore painting depicts Balarama in a graceful pose, smiling gently, his hands in Abhaya (fearlessness) and Varada (blessing) mudra.
The use of vivid colors in Balaram’s attire and a traditional pallet in the background with gold embellishment makes the painting a beautiful Tanjore art, a shrine to Haldhara for his worshippers.
