The animals here presents animals, humans and some interesting pictographic designs. Two ferocious looking lions facing each other on either side of the bamboo tree, form the main theme of this painting. The bamboo tree forms a part of most pictures as a symbol of fertility and prosperity. It has not only been abstracted very well, but also turned into a graphic symbol with powerful pictorial characteristics here. The two decorated lions emerge from the bowers of flowering plants. Minute lines are drawn to delineate the hair on the neck and tails of the animals. The elephant above the bamboo tree is considered a symbol of wealth by the people of Madhubani. Two human figures, linear in form, stand on either side of the elephant.
This painting was started with a rigorously selected subject matter without any attempt to transpose a literal scene or create a photographic semblance of an ordinary situation. The entire color scheme is indigenous. Indeed, the color is probably the most emotive of all elements in this painting.
An element of strangeness, the sense of novel wonder, a mystery burning at the heart of life are some of the intrinsic characteristics of the best in art and it is this very strangeness, this incandescence which the painting of Madhubani transmits.
