The standing figure of Lord Vishnu in the Thanjavur idiom. It depicts Him as the chaturbhujadhari, the one possessed of (‘dhari’) four (‘chatur’) arms (‘bhuja’), with the conch and the discus in His posterior hands. A dusky, handsome brow; a composure of equanimity and omniscience. Flowing robes and necklaces of sumptuously studded gold.
The gold layered upon extensive gessowork makes this painting a fine example of Tanjore art. From the pillars that flank Lord Vishnu and the archway above His head; the Kirtimukham at the zenith of the archway and the temple entrance structures on the upper corners of the canvas. These sections are strategically studded with red and green stones that resemble rubies and emeralds in their glamour.
At the feet of Lord Vishnu, on either side, are poised two of the dashavatara: Parashurama to the right of Vishnu, Narasimha (with Lakshmi) to the left. Another striking feature of this Vishnu Tanjore painting is the winged backdrop framing the standing figure, indicative of the presence of Garuda.
