In the Hindu cosmos, Sri Venkateshvara, or Tirupati Balaji is the supreme manifestation of Lord Vishnu's powers in the mortal realm. His devotees approach him as an active or Jaagrita devata, who is swift and benevolent in his actions. Accompanying Lord Balaji in this Tanjore painting, his twin consorts- Sridevi and Bhudevi are presented alongside his divine and sacred form, which is revered in the shrine at Tirumala.
The rectangular and horizontally laid composition of this Thanjavur painting depicts the three deities inside individual arched shrines, which are embellished with glimmering 24-karat gold. While Bhudevi and Balaji stand inside ornate Kirtimukha aureoles, Sridevi or Lakshmi is enthroned on a blooming lotus, with her silken drapes forming an exquisite spread.
