An ornate ashta-Ganapati Tanjore painting. The Lord has no less than 32 roopas (forms) as expounded in the Ganesha Purana. The painting that you see on this page is of remarkable dimensions. The surface area of the canvas is marked out in nine uniform panels; the central ones in the middle and the lowermost row together accommodate one roopa, making a total of eight (‘ashta’) roopas of Ganesha.
The fact that it is Thanjavur art explains the luxuriant gold embellishment across the canvas. The thrones and the plinths of the seated and the standing Ganeshas, respectively, are layered with gold. The same applies to the miniscule yet detailed adornment on each figure, no matter the stance.
Along the upper edge of each Ganesha panel is a studded gold archway. These resemble the traditional temple entranceway found in ancient regional architecture. The elongated panel at the centre features a complete templetop structure, executed with considerable detail and symmetry. Its bejewelled body conveys the divine glamour of the son of Shiva and Parvati.
