The sage Kashyapa is the son of Marici, one of the six spiritual sons of Brahma. Kashyapa is the chief among the Prajapatis or progenitors. All animate creatures in this world owe their origin to Kashyapa. The fact that such a sage as Kashyapa worshipped Kamadhenu attests to the significance of cow worship.
The cow is considered to be the home of all the gods, and therefore is capable of granting release from existence (sansara) to its worshippers. Keeping this in view, the Tanjore artist has painted various celestials on the body of the cow.
