The vivacious blue and golden dominate the frame in this oil painting by Anup Gomay who through his brushes has put life into canvas. The dark, mystical blue is complemented well by golden, brown, and yellow shades. We see a youthful woman lovingly feeding her pet peacocks fruits from the basket placed in her lap.
The woman wears a pretty blue lehenga embroidered with ethnic motifs using golden threads. Her ample bosoms are covered with a matching blue blouse. On her head is a translucent chunri (a long scarf) that falls gracefully over hand adorned by gold bangles. Highlighting her shapely neckline is a gold choker and a string of pearls. Three peacocks surround her, looking in anticipation at the lady, who gazes dreamily at them, with a bunch of black grapes in her hand. The colour of these grand birds matches perfectly with the dress of the lady, creating a beautiful repetition of shades within the frame. A young woman, peacock, and grapes, all symbolize fertility, abundance and are repeatedly used in visual and oral culture related to romance. Peacocks also signify yearning, the seemingly unending wait for one’s paramour. The lady feeding the peacocks in this painting alludes to the feeding of one’s longing with the sweet fruit of inner passion.
