Basant or spring in India is not just a season. It is a celebration of fertility, abundance, the revival of life in all living beings. Festivities on the community and an individual level mark the arrival of this vibrant season. Among other things, swings are hung from trees in villages, on which young village maidens sit and enjoy the blissful surroundings. Trees sprouting new leaves, movement of the swing and playful laughter of the women bring out the essence of spring, a celebration of rejuvenating powers of mother Nature.
In this vibrant oil painting, two youthful ladies, probably friends, enjoy the swing and each other's company, all decked in colourful garments and traditional jewellery. Both the women are wearing colours (especially red and green) that signify auspiciousness. The lady dressed in a red sari is wearing ornaments such as toe rings highlighting her status as a married woman. The strings of the swing are wrapped in aamr Pallava (leaves of the mango tree) and freshly bloomed flowers. These attributes (married woman, fresh flowers and leaves of mango tree) when combined, create traditional Indian imagery of fecundity and prosperity, promising similar energies for the space this oil painting will decorate.
