Often worshipped together, Kubera and Lakshmi are the pair of divine beings who are said to bring wealth, prosperity and more. Associated with auspiciousness, Lakshmi is the manifestation of fortune itself. Having to struggle his way to godhood, Kubera is linked with material wealth in the form of riches. Kubera is a demi-god, potbellied and adorned with golden jewellery.
Though the story of his birth varies, he is often said to be from the family of Prajapati Pulastya. He thrives in a grove he calls Caitraratha, granted to be the ruler of Yakshas by Lord Shiva. He acts as the treasurer of all gods and is thus worshipped by his human devotees. Goddess Laskhmi, on the other hand, emerged out of the sea. During the great churning of the ocean, devas and asuras both wanted prosperity and when Lakshmi emerged as wealth personified, both fought over her. However, she got a choice whether she wished to go with devas or asuras. She chose the devas and out of them, she chose to be a consort to Lord Vishnu, the sustainer of the cosmos. In this Tanjore painting, just as in many other paintings, they are depicted together as they are believed to bring luck and opulence in their followers’ lives.
