The pata-chitra, folk art of Orissa, has found mass appeal and appreciation. This painting narrates the story of the life of Krishna, from his earliest days, in minute details his birth, the mischevious pranks of the child, the follies of the boy, the amours of the youth; these incidents being the subjects of boundless wonder and delight. But that is not all, this painting also deals with demons in various forms, whom Krishna destroyed for them to find salvation at his hands.
The theme is not the only interesting element of this painting; the compositional division to narrate each incident is more so. The central panel is rectangular further divided into a square in the middle, flanked by two lotuses. Inside in the centre square consists of Radha, Krishna and the gopis; the other avatars of Vishnu also find place in this square. The core of the lotus depicts important incidents of Krishna's life and the petals the rasa dance of Krishna.
The fact that the incidents are not arranged in a chronological order, does in no way depreciate the beauty of this marvelous work of art.
