The school of Basohli painting in traditional Indian art has exalted the life stories- Lilas of Sri Krishna from the time of its origin. Folk devotional poetry around the dark-skinned youth of Brija and his heart-warming and nurturing Lilas filled the canvases of Basohli with a divinity par excellence, an example of which is this exquisite Krishna painting.

Sri Krishna, in the center of the composition, is painted in a deep blue, with auspicious marks all over his body which is contrasted by a lovely yellow dhoti. His gopas (cowherd boys), Gopis (with expressions of awe), and residents of Brija stand around him under Mount Govardhana which appears to be an inverted umbrella.

Fluting enchantingly, Krishna (unlike his other images as Govardhana-Giri-Dhaari), in this painting does not hold the mount on his Tarjani. His protective presence is symbolic, around which life in all forms blooms despite the negativities of the world.
