Amongst the different exotic attractions for the tourist in the culturally endowed state of Rajasthan, the Kathputli dance- the street performance through dolls, stands out. In this acrylic on canvas painting by Ranjit Sarkar, the female dancer has been manifested through an actual woman, dressed in ethnic Banjara costume, who dances charmingly.
The male Sutradhara or narrator is painted as a Kathputli doll, with his eyes distinctively different from the animated eyes of the dancer. Giving a beautiful spiritual meaning to the scene, the hands of the blue-skinned Lord (Krishna), with his peacock feather peaking from behind the curtain, are outlined- as the supreme Sutradhar, bonded with the strings of whose will, every living being takes the stage of life, dances and departs.
