The strikingly distinctive countenance of the Kathakali dancer. Kathakali is a classical Indian dance form that is almost endemic to the Southwestern Kerala region (the Malayali community). As could be deduced from this painting, Kathakali involves elaborate makeup designed to accentuate every stance of the dancer’s face.
A brilliant natural green is the predominant colour in this palate. Lips a lustrous scarlet, laterally extended to give the impression of a consistent smile. Thickly kohl-rimmed eyes that are swimming with expression. Underneath brows extended all the way to the ear.
A gold-toned tilaka on the temple of the dancer. Immediately below, a vermillion bindi upon the midbrow. Hints of the other pastels in the sliver of headdress discernible along the (viewer’s) right edge of the canvas.
