After she argued with Shiva, Parvati left Kailash and resided in Kashi. The glory of Kailash was left with her, and the Universe in the absence of the great mother was becoming lifeless. In search of Parvati, Shiva reached Kashi, where he saw life nurturing under the reign of Parvati, who as Annapurna was nourishing her children. “Kashi Puradheeshwari” is an evocation to the sovereign powers of Parvati, which rule the city of Shiva. Attired mesmerically and with a maternal aura, Parvati as Annapurna offers food to Shiva, who stands in her court, extending his bowl, eager to be nourished by Adi Shakti.
Inspired by the aesthetics of Eastern India, this acrylic on canvas creates a heavenly scene of Parvati’s supremacy over Kashi and Shiva’s devoted affection for Parvati. Behind Shiva stands Nandi, partially visible on the canvas, as is Bhairava, the guardian of Kashi, who appears in the foreground of the painting, holding his trident and an expression of firmness on his half-visible countenance.
