The majestic Tanjore painting that you see here portrays Lord Kartikeya who is also known as Kumara and Murugan (in South India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, etc). He is the dutiful and noble son of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati, and being the killer of the demon Taraka, he is revered as the “God of War”. If you notice, you will find that every bit of this painting has been precisely embellished with pure gold coating studded with the sequences of tiny stones for an extra beautification. This is the characteristic feature of Tanjore style artwork which makes it stand out the ordinary ones.
Lord Kartikeya, the ever-youthful man, sits upon a huge throne with a beautifully carved Kirtimukham Prabhavali as its back that shines throughout the painting. The lord is clad in a bright yellow dhoti down to his ankles and is elaborately adorned with several ornaments on his fair-complexioned body. The warrior god carries a powerful weapon called Vel, which is a divine spear, that represents his shakti. His two upper hands hold an indistinct object while the lower hands are in Abhaya Mudra and Varada Mudra. A soft and gentle smile on his face depicts his merciful nature. His divine mount, a peacock with colorful feathers is also present with him, ready to serve the lord at any moment. The way the artist has designed this painting with intricate detailing is undeniably praiseworthy. Also, the use of bright colors to make it attractive is another feature of Tanjore style artwork.
