Introducing the Karma Kagyu Refuge Tree, highlights the transmission of teachings and blessings from one generation of masters to the next, emphasizing the interconnectedness of the lineage and the guidance available to practitioners. The Vajrayana tradition, which emphasizes esoteric practices and teachings, is honored by the Karma Kagyu Refuge tree. It beautifully depicts a golden tree with five branches that are released into the air.
Vajradhara, the primordial Buddha who symbolizes the pinnacle of enlightenment, is located in the middle of the Vajradhara Refuge tree. Images of numerous Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, gods, and lineage instructors envelop Vajradhara. The Sangha is depicted to the right by Bodhisattvas and monks, the Yidams are displayed on the front branch, and all of the Dharmapalas are surrounded by their attendants beneath the Lamas. Their teachings are represented to the left by a mound of pechas, or sacred texts.
A continuous succession of realized masters passing down teachings and practices is highly valued in the Karma Kagyu Tradition. Thus, the Refuge Tree has representations for a number of these lineage teachers, including Tilopa, Naropa, Marpa, Milarepa, and Gampopa. These gurus are highly regarded because of their association with and commitment to disseminating the wisdom of Mahamudra and other profound spiritual practices.
