Kalindi, also known
as Krishna and Yamuna is a divine river goddess, associated with Sri Krishna as
one of his consorts, and a purifying stream of a mystical dark color, matching
the Megha-Shyama (nimbus cloud black) color of Krishna. In this artwork, Yamuna
is represented in her sacred form described in texts, riding her mount turtle.
The artist’s personal touch to the imagery can be seen in the attire and
ornamentation of Yamuna, who wears a traditional Marathi style drape and nath
(nose ornament) among other exquisite jewelry. The assured poise, towering
crown, and calm expressions of Yamuna emanate a heavenliness in her aura and
the flowy lines enrich the artwork with a moving artistic beauty.
