Evocation of the creative powers of goddess Saraswati, this gouache painting by Anuj Shastrakar presents Devi as “Kala Saraswati”- the patron of art and crafts. Wrapped in a translucent saree in Nevari style, whose folds mimic the gentle waves of a river, goddess Saraswati strikes an elegant yet imposing stance. She holds a paper and a brush in her hand, while her Veena rests behind her, on the ground.
A floral gajra adorns Devi Saraswati’s traditional hairdo, along with an Ambda- a crown-like hair ornament. The rest of her ensemble includes ethnic jewelry such as the Marathi Nath (nose ornament), Thushi or choker style necklace, Kaan or cuff-like earrings and bangles, made with beautiful pearls, gems, and gold.
The goddess casts a still and empowering spell all over her environs, gazing at the onlooker with her lotus eyes. This ethereal form of Saraswati reminds one of the legends from Puranas, where she becomes the creative force of Brahma and the cause of the creation.
