Lord Ganesha sits on a throne of gold and velvet. His legs are in lalitasana and the anterior right hand (of the four hands of this chaturbhujadhari iconography) cradles a plateful of laddoos. As any devotee would know, this Indian sweetmeat is indispensable to Ganesha’s iconography. In fact, the plump little baby of Shiva-Parvati resembles one in form and texture as well as sweetness of persona.
A garland of fresh flowers descends from the Ganesha’s neck all the way down to the seat of His throne. Ample gold jewellery complements His dhoti and angavastram of silk. The glory of the Lord is accentuated by the tall kalashas (ritual urns) of gold on either side of the throne. Their bodies are studded with precious stones and their mouths, choc-blocked with the sacred leaf of bael and the fruit of tender coconut.
The backdrop is a solid, burnt orange colour. The foot of the pendant leg of the seated deity rests on a cushion in a gold case, right next to which is another bowlful of laddoos. The gold-on-black framing completes the composition.
