This painting, monochromatic in tone, defies that colour is an essential element of a painting. Under the shade of a leafy tree sits Krishna, in the company of beautiful gopis. Their placement divides the painting into two distinct parts. On the left, we see women looking like celestial singers playing musical instruments. Different levels of the boulders decide the seating arrangement of each. In every figure, the linear rhythms of the drapery, ornaments and hair dos mould themselves to the underlying soft body with its sinuous and graceful curves. The right side of the painting, however, has cowherds with their cows requiring lesser detail and moulding. If the left side of the painting present an ethereal milieu, the right side brings the environment to earth.
An unmistakable rhythm and a sense of movement are communicated through the swans in the rippling water and the peacocks on either ends. The painter uses them as a supporting motif to create the mood.
