Guru Nanak travelled far and wide to spread the word of God. Constant Companions on such journeys were Mardana and Bala. The former was a Muslim 'dum', a professional singer and the latter played the 'ruhbab'. Sitting on a low seat, against a bolster, Nanak recites from a manuscript to the accompaniment of Bala's ruhbab. He wears a saffron robe, his one hand counts the beads of the rosary and the other holds the book, his arm resting on the yog-danda. A green halo surrounds his calm demeanour. Mardana, wearing a commoner's attire of the times, hold a fly whisk above Guru Nanak; while Bala looks up to the Guru with reverence while playing on the instrument.
The right side of the painting prominently displays a banana plantain, while the rest of the background remains plain but for the numerous shades of the sky.
