Belonging to the Pushtimarg tradition, pichwai paintings are a traditional form of Indian folk art. The devotional nature of these paintings could be seen in the themes. The pichwai painting that you see on this page depicts a herd of mother cows, each with a calf prancing around her teats.

Their ivory-coloured skin is superimposed with the handprint of Krishna, indicative of loving strokes. Necks and limbs and horns bedecked in gold, which is symbolic of the superior status of the cow in Indian culture. A composure of innocence and compassion on each bovine countenance.

Twenty-four cows arranged in uniform rows and columns. Fields of silvery gray in the backdrop. The space between each row and column interspersed with lotuses of fresh, pale crimson complexion. The decorative, ochre-coloured border is a signature aspect of pichwai paintings and a standard of the work’s authenticity.
