Inlaid in gold and precious stones, this Tanjore painting depicts a reverent scene of Kamadhenu, also known as Surbhi or Gomatha, being worshipped by Vashista Muni. Kamadhenu is a goddess who manifests as a divine cow who is considered to be the mother of all cows. She emerged from the churning of the vast cosmic ocean and anyone who is fortunate enough to be her owner is blessed with whatever they desire. Kamadhenu provided Vasishta with his needs for the sacrifices, and the needs of an entire army that he catered to.
In this exquisite painting, she is portrayed as a white cow with a female, oval head crowned with jewels, mammary glands, the wings of a bird, and the tail of a peafowl. Under the shade of a tree, she stands pure against the tinted, vibrant background while her calf takes nourishment from her. On her left sits Vashista Muni in supplication, worshipping and bringing her offerings. He sits on a gold throne in gold garbs, back cushioned by a sky blue pillow. Both of them are ornamented in shining jewellery. Kamadhenu takes the offerings gracefully. Giving and selfless, she is truly honoured well in the Tanjore style of painting.
