Devi Sita in this magnificent Tanjore artwork, embellished with shimmering gold leaf, is based on the costume worn by Thai actors portraying Sida, in the Thai adaptation of the Ramayana, the "Ramakien" (glory of Sri Rama).
The iconography is taken from Thai temple murals, where the epic of Rama is beautifully painted.
In the left hand of Sita hovering gracefully in the air, one can see a Mudrika (ring), a reminder of the episode where she received Rama’s ring from Hanuman, as a message of his arrival to Lanka.
Against a dark background, the gold-covered image of Sita glows, reminding us of her glory as the avatar of Sri Lakshmi. The painting is framed by polished wood, offering a portable piece of heritage to the connoisseurs.
