Saraswati, the Goddess of eloquent speech, knowledge, and melodious music, is one among the three goddesses (along with Parvati and Lakshmi) and forms the divine triad known as “Tridevi”. She is the eternal consort of Lord Brahma and thus assists him in creating the material world to continue the cycle of repeated births and deaths. As her name suggests, every aspect of Saraswati (one who helps realize the essence of self) teaches all the jivas (individual souls) to connect with the Supreme Lord which is the ultimate goal of human life.
Underneath the beautiful Prabhavali arch bearing typical Indian motifs, Goddess Saraswati in her four-handed form gracefully sits in lalitasana on throne. She has a molten gold complexion and is attired in a perfectly pleated saree, and appears just like the glowing sun. The soft and gentle smile on her face describes her extremely merciful nature. Her four arms represent the four heads of Lord Brahma. The musical instrument called “Veena” held with her upper left and lower right hands represents the flow of the sweet rhythm of the Absolute Truth. She holds a rosary of crystal beads in her upper right hand which emphasizes the importance of chanting the holy names of God. In the lower left hand, she holds the Vedas that are the only means of knowing God. The lustrous effect of the gold embellishment and the use of vivid colors in this painting make it really eye-catching.
