Goddess Rajarajeshwari is one of the many names of the ancient energy of Shakti. She is a manifestation of beauty and grace; a bringer of wealth, prosperity and happiness; and the remover of sorrows. Sugarcane in one hand and a cluster of flowers in the other, she sits benevolently on a throne carried on the backs of the Trimurthis, whom she rules over. When all else fails, she is the one who holds the power of creation and destruction of the cosmos as we know it.
The Sri Yantra, also known as Sri Chakra, lies beneath her, a symbol of utter devotion and meditation. It is known to be the holder of the one hundred and eight forms of Goddess Shakti, the supreme goddess. She is undefeatable and has slayed many demons who threaten the peace of her devotees. Among dozens of her names, one is that of Tripura Sundari, labelling her a goddess of the three states of consciousness and the three Gunas. In this Tanjore painting, she has been depicted draped in a gold embossed saree with beautiful patterns. She sits atop the prone body of Sadashiva, feet held up by a delicate lotus flower. Here, she is truly divine in her poster and essence.
