The embodiment of grace and beauty, Goddess Meenakshi’s original home is at Madurai, Tamil Nadu. However, she is worshipped all over India, for she is the reincarnation/avatar of Goddess Parvathi. In turn, her divine consort is Lord Sundareshwarar, an avatar of Lord Shiva. The story of how Goddess Parvati took rebirth is interesting. One of her disciples was childless. She agreed to Vidyavati’s request to be born as his child in his next life. Vidyavati was King Malayadhwajan in his next life. Parvathi was born to him as a daughter, Meenakshi. However, the king had her brought up as a son, even encouraging her to undertake military expeditions. Princess Meenakshi confronted Lord Shiva, in the form of Sundareshwarar, during one such expedition. The meeting led to a grand wedding, conducted by Lord Vishnu, in the presence of other celestial beings.
This Tanjore-style painting portrays her in the garb common to the traditional South Indian woman – the six-yard saree. Even the golden jewelry adorning her ears, nose, neck, wrists, and ankles, are heavy and traditional. The right palm encloses a stand, on which perches a green parrot, the symbol of love. The crown on the Goddess’ head suffices to proclaim her royal origins.
