Goddess Lakshmi is known as the Goddess of fortune who brings prosperity and abundance in the lives of the jivas (individual souls). Along with Goddesses Parvati and Saraswati, she forms the divine triad called ‘Tridevi’ which is responsible for the creation, maintenance and destruction of the material world. Since Lakshmi is the eternal consort and internal potency of Lord Vishnu, she assists Him in maintaining and sustaining the Universe. She not only blesses the jivas with material wealth but also bestows spiritual wealth (the knowledge of the Absolute Truth) upon them, for it is the only goal of the human life.
This Tanjore painting portrays Goddess Lakshmi, also known as Shri, seated on a throne in Ardhapadmasana; her right leg placed above while the left one going towards the floor. She is gracefully attired in a red saree that forms many pleats. Adorned with a conical crown on her head and several gold ornaments on her fair complexioned body, she holds a lotus flower in each of her upper hands, while the lower hands are in the boon granting Varada Mudra and the gesture of fearlessness Abhaya Mudra. From her lower right hand, a stream of flow of gold coins pouring down can also be seen. A soft and gentle smile on the Goddess describes her merciful nature towards the devotees. Meanwhile, the use of specific combination of colors such as bright red and the navy-blue background makes the icon of Goddess Lakshmi eye-catching and pleasing. On top of it, the embellishment with pure gold and studded stones enhances the entire look of this painting.
