The seated chaturbhujadharini Devi Lakshmi with Her doll-like countenance. On a gold-and-velvet throne She rests, a garland of young pink blooms cascading down Her torso. The pale natural colour of the flowers contrasts sharply with the metallic glitter of the solid gold inlay that makes up Her saree as well as the throne She is seated on.
The lotus is an integral part of the iconography of Devi Lakshmi. The archway above Her head is lined with compact blooms of the kind. In addition to the archway, the entire temple structure that surrounds Her is made with layered-gold gessowork. This is a hallmark of the authentic traditional Tanjore painting.
Given that She is the presiding deity over plenitude and wealth, the Tanjore idiom does justice to the iconography of goddess Lakshmi. The gold embellishment spread across the canvas is generously studded with red and blue stones, which resemble rubies and sapphires. This Thanjavur art Lakshmi temple floating in the heavens captures the glamour of Lakshmi like no other.
