Devi Ganga in Hinduism is the personification of divine purity. The touch of her waters can cure the body and soul- waters that nourish not only living beings but also lands on which life-giving food grains are grown. Exalting the heavenly status of Ganga, this oil painting depicts her as a youthful maiden, ornamented and worshipped by Bhagirathi. In her hands are a bunch of blue lilies and a Purnaghtata (pot of plenty). The mountains in the background are the Himalayas, where the river goddess first descended from the Deva-Loka (heavens).
