The great goddess in Universal imagination has been the revered source of civilization, life, and its sustenance. In Hinduism, the supreme feminine or Adi Shakti is evoked as Durga, who is the manifestation of the combined powers of all gods, an entity beyond sages, humans, and divines.
This watercolor on paper is an ode to the great mother, who stands towering, accompanied by Krishna and Shiva, who sit in her court, being nurtured by her. Devi is adorned beautifully, with fish-shaped earrings, three powerful eyes, gold and pearl ornaments, and a lovely saree.
In her four arms, she holds the conch, discus, sugarcane (associated with her aspect as Rajarajeshwari, the supreme mother goddess in Tantra), and an arrow. Taking her lotus foot in his beautifully red-tinted palm, Krishna applies aalta on the foot of Devi, a divine picture of adoration and reverence. On the left foreground sits Shiva, receiving the Chakra from the goddess, which is marked by the symbol of Sri Yantra, the most powerful Tantric device and the abode of the goddess.
With primary colors, symbolic of the origin of life and its movement adorning the background, the painting is an aesthetically rich proclamation of the powers of the great mother, who is worshipped not only by humans but by the great gods, who become devotees in the court of the Mahashakti, whose aura eternally fills the Universe with light.
