Periplus of Erythraean Sea, a Greek work describes Cape Comorin as the place where goddess Kaumari or Kumari was worshipped. The Shakti of Kumara or Kartikeya, Kaumari is also known as Kanya-Kumari, a name also used for the great-goddess Durga. She is depicted as a young warrior goddess, a symbol of valour and authority on the battlefield.
In this painting, Kaumari or Kartikeyani is presented as a beautiful woman, blue-skinned and clad in a pleasing saree of pink colour. Her ornaments enrich the beauty of her form which is gorgeous and dominant simultaneously. On her lap is a child, showing her status as a Matrika, contrasted by the bow and arrow she is holding, elements that remind us of her association with warfare.
